{"id":1481,"date":"2013-01-17T14:28:30","date_gmt":"2013-01-17T22:28:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/bpapaloalto.org\/newbpa\/?p=1481"},"modified":"2013-04-12T13:12:42","modified_gmt":"2013-04-12T20:12:42","slug":"academy-award-winners-include-a-barron-park-resident-and-a-gunn-high-alum","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bpapaloalto.org\/newbpa\/academy-award-winners-include-a-barron-park-resident-and-a-gunn-high-alum\/","title":{"rendered":"Academy Award Winners Include a Barron Park Resident and a Gunn High Alum"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"text-align: right;\">.. by Greta Gize Olbrich<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: right;\"><\/div>\n<div>The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced the recipients of the Scientific and Technical Achievements earlier in January, and two of the winners have connections to Palo Alto.<strong>\u00a0Lawrence Kesteloot (San Francisco)<span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,clean,sans-serif;\">,\u00a0<\/span>Drew Olbrich (Palo Alto &#8211; Barron Park Resident),<span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,clean,sans-serif;\">\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span>Daniel Wexler<span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,clean,sans-serif;\">\u00a0<\/span>(Soda Springs &#8211; Gunn High graduate)<\/strong> will receive an Academy Award for Technical Achievement for their creation of the Light system for computer graphics lighting at PDI\/DreamWorks.\u00a0 Kesteloot, Olbrich, andWexler will be honored for their achievement in filmmaking\u00a0<span id=\"yui_3_7_2_1_1358349533338_48976\"> at t<\/span>he annual Scientific and Technical Awards Presentation in\u00a0Beverly Hills on February 9,\u00a0two weeks prior to the televised Academy Awards.<\/div>\n<div id=\"yui_3_7_2_1_1358349533338_48972\">\n<p id=\"yui_3_7_2_1_1358349533338_48986\">\n<p>Kesteloot, Olbrich, and Wexler worked at PDI\/DreamWorks for a number of years when the office was located on Park Ave. in Palo Alto, near the Fry&#8217;s building, before its move to Redwood City off Seaport Blvd.\u00a0PDI\/DreamWorks&#8217; Light system has been used to make several of DreamWorks&#8217; most successful films such as the Shrek and Madagascar series. The first Shrek movie won the Academy Award for Best Animated Picture in 2002. One of Palo Alto&#8217;s Bol Park Donkeys was used as model for the donkey character, which was voiced by Eddie Murphy. Bol Park is right around the corner from Barron Park School, where Drew Olbrich&#8217;s children attend school.<\/p>\n<p><em>More about the Light System:<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>The Light System is virtually unchanged from its original incarnation over 15 years ago, and is still in continuous use due to its emphasis on interactive responsiveness, final\u2013quality interactive render preview, scalable architecture and powerful user\u2013configurable spreadsheet interface.<\/em><\/p>\n<p id=\"yui_3_7_2_1_1358349533338_48989\">Unlike other Academy Awards, achievements receiving Scientific and Technical Awards need not have been developed and introduced during 2012.
